George
McGrath
"You
have to climb Mount Everest to reach The Valley of The Dolls"... In 1983
George McGrath moved into Ten Bungalows on Poinsettia Place above Melrose
and began in earnest his ruthless climb to Show Business Success.
Using The Groundlings as a launch pad, George forged a career as an actor/writer/producer.
"I knew he was a triple threat the moment we met," remembers fellow Bungaloid
Crawford Binion. "He's talented. Really Talented," added Bungaloid Bob
Higgins.
"He learned how to
roll with the punches and in this business they come left and right and
below the belt," added landlady and former Hollywood waitress Molly Adams.
"He once gave me a ride to the airport," offered Bungalow regular Wren
Rolison.
After working at The
Groundlings as a Writer/Actor/Director/Teacher, George was a series regular
and writer on "Pee Wee's Playhouse" receiving several Emmy nominations.
Then came featured roles in "Punchline" with Tom Hanks and "Rat Boy" directed
by the tormented Sondra Locke. Although his resume is peppered with memorable
guest appearances (his characters on "Tracey Takes On" destroy me), our
Mr. McGrath has focused on a career as a writer and a producer in television.
He created, wrote produced, and starred in Nick at Nite's first original
series "On The Television" (I was delighted to appear in an episode). George
was the original head writer of NBC's "Later With Greg Kinnear" and since
1997 has been a writer and consulting producer for HBO's "Tracey Takes
On". Although not addicted to Booze and Dope, George McGrath has
made his way to Hollywood's Mount Everest and now lives quietly in the
Valley without the aid of Dolls. Oh, and as if he doesn't have enough
hyphens in his resume, George also writes songs and was winner of The TV
Theme Song Hall of Fame Song of The Year for "Pee Wee's Playhouse Theme
Song".
When the above photograph
was taken at Ten Bungalows on November 3, 1990, George was listening to
Madonna's "Vogue" and thinking about Barbara Parkins.
