Max
the Cat
Dear Max had an interesting entrance in
to my life in 1980. I had just moved into a complex of Bungalows near the
old Goldwyn Studios in Hollywood and my neighbor David Gallegley was performing
in a play at The Matrix Theater on Melrose. One cold January night when
David arrived back at Ten Bungalows he heard a noise under the hood of
his old Buick Special and opened it to find a terrified cat clinging to
an engine part covered with dirt and oil. He rescued the traumatized animal
and named her Max and when he shortly thereafter moved to New York City
I inherited the somewhat claustraphobic feline. I considered her
mine and fed and cared for her but this independant spirit would only "visit"
inside and would go nuts if anyone ever closed the door. As the years went
by, Max became a permenant fixture at Ten Bungalows (she slept in a jasmine
tree) and would drop in and visit any resident willing to leave their door
open for her to exit when the spirit moved her. She would drop by any Bungalow
that had a party in progress. Max loved parties. But heaven help you if
you closed the door with Miss Max inside. It will be hell in Kitty
Heaven if they ever close their doors for that is where this sweet angel
is prowling these days.
