GLENN'S
BIOGRAPHY
Glenn
Shadix was born in Bessemer, Alabama in the early 1950's and the
week he was born his family bought their first television set. "In
those early days my entire, and quite large, family all gathered
around the set at night and gave Uncle Miltie, Lucy and Desi and
George and Gracie their undivided attention. From my earliest memory
I decided I was somehow going to get inside that box and make my
family laugh like they laughed at Lucy and cry like they did with
Playhouse 90 dramas."
In his early years Glenn traveled and lived all over Alabama, Tennessee
and Florida's Gulf coast. In 1961 Glenn went to the Florida Drive
Inn in Shalimar, Florida and with his parents watched a double bill
of A STREET CAR NAMED DESIRE and SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER.
"It was a life changing experience watching those two films
and had an enormous impact on the gigantic outdoor screen. Too young
to absorb the greater subtleties, it nevertheless imprinted a fascination
with film and
acting that has never left me."
In the years that followed, Glenn seized every opportunity to appear
on stage -- first in church pageants, then school plays and eventually
community theater. "By high school I was living in Tallulah
Bankhead's home town of Jasper, Alabama and insinuated myself in
every play produced at Walker County High. After graduation I spent
a summer working with actress Peggy Cass at Florence State and gleaned
all I could from the academy award nominated, Tony award winning
actress who had come to perform GOODBYE MY FANCY with selected
drama students who had auditioned for the opportunity to get a taste
of professional theater. I was doomed to become an actor after that
summer of 1971".
In the fall of 1973 Glenn moved to Birmingham and did play after
play -- college productions, children's theater and every community
theater in the area. After a highly successful production of THE
BOYS IN THE BAND, Glenn left Alabama in 1973 and got his Equity
card playing Sancho Panza in MAN OF LA MANCHA at The Alliance
Theater in Atlanta.
"In
1974 I attended Birmingham Southern College on a drama scholarship
and that was where I received my foundation as a serious actor.
Professor Lynda Linford and Dr. Arnold Powell provided me with the
training , guidance and practical experience in the classics to
prepare me to head off to New York in 1976."
"In New York I saw play after play, met and spent quality time
with Tennessee Williams, worked as a waiter at Tavern On The
Green, and cleaned houses and apartments for additional
income. Got a good taste of life in New York City!"
In the summer of 1977, Glenn joined friends in Los Angeles and spent
ten years studying, doing dozens of plays, studying with Roy London,
Ivana Chubbuck, and The Groundlings Improv Group. Becoming
a member of The Ensemble Studio Theater in 1986 his role
as Gertrude Stein directed by David Kaplan earned Glenn an L.A Weekly
Award as well as bringing him to the attention of fledgling director,
Tim Burton. Burton then cast him as Otho, the psychic interior director,
in 1988's BEETLEJUICE.
Since then Glenn has appeared in over thirty
features and countless television shows. Glenn is currently
recurring on HBO's CARNIVALE. "I have just completed
a film with Italian artist Francesco Vezzoli that will debut this
June at The Venice Biennale 2005. Last year I wrote and executive
produced SUNSET TUXEDO for director Rebecca Cammisa in association
with The American Film Institute's Women's Directors Workshop."
Some of
Glenn's better known films include featured roles in THE
NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HEATHERS, DEMOLITION
MAN, PLANET OF THE APES (2001),
LOVE AFFAIR and THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE.
An avid portrait photographer, Glenn's CLOCK
